Life story of Hildegard of Bingen
Hildegard of Bingen was born in the year 1098 (her birthdate is unknown), in Bermersheim in Germany. She was the 10th child of a minor noble family of the Holy Roman Empire, she was not expected to be the breadwinner of the family. Since birth, Hildegard was completely dedicated to the church. From the young age of 3 she believed to be having visions of glowing objects and. She soon realized that she had a unique gift, she had kept it a secret for many years.
At the age of 8, she was sent to Jutta an Anchoress who had given her a religious education. Jutta and a monk named Volmar were the only people knew about her unique gift. She had learnt how to read Psalter in Latin, but she was never perfect at it. Jutta had exposed Hildegard to religious services which were the foundations for composing musical pieces. She began as a nun at the young age of 15 and from then on she became the Abess of the convent.
Hildegard had become famous for the writings of sacred music and also wrote about natural history and medicine. She composed and wrote music for a play called the ‘Ordo Virtutum’. In 1160 she had wrote a book called the ‘Liber Simplicis Medicinae’, a simple book for medicine. Her book ‘Scivias’ was one of her major theology and visionary works which describe the visions that she had saw.
